Is that morning or evening BBC One?

Posted on 29th July 2019 by The Voice Last updated on 26th March 2021 Filed under Opinion

BBC One will doubtless be promoting Animal Park Summer Special regularly throughout the coming week – just as it did tonight just before 7pm. The BBC generally only runs promos for programmes that are transmitted between 7pm and 11pm. So, we perhaps generally assume an evening transmission.

However, that’s still no excuse for dropping the ‘am’ and ‘pm’ from programme times on promo endboards.

On the rare occasion where the BBC promotes a daytime programme, well, things can get rather confusing – particularly if played out in the same junction as a promo for a programme being transmitted on the same day and at a similar time – but in the ‘pm’.

“Starts next Monday at 9.15 on BBC One” the voiceover for Animal Park Summer Special tell us.

The BBC News Channel is the only BBC domestic TV channel to include ‘am’ and ‘pm’ in their promotions.

The vast majority of other TV channels, including the big names – ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Sky – include ‘am’ and ‘pm’ in their programme promotions. Probably because…it’s the sensible thing to do!

It’s a simple fix BBC. Go on – you know you want to.
