The 59th season of RTÉ One’s The Late Late Show kicked off last night with an extended title sequence featuring visuals highlighting the ongoing impact of the Covid pandemic on Irish life.

Host Ryan Tubridy opened the show by assuring viewers that “we’ll be here every single Friday night, no matter what happens, during this horrible adventure that we’re still on, together.”

A performance of a cover of The Cranberries’ Dreams, by a super collective of Irish female artists – Irish Women in Harmony – had to be split across two studios in order to maintain appropriate social distancing: Studio 4 (the usual home of The Late Late Show) and Studio 5 (the main base for RTÉ Sport).

Social distancing rules also meant new seating arrangements for in-studio interviews.
