40 years ago, it was a common sight at this time of the day on BBC One/Two. These days, the test card is but a distant memory.

But this lunchtime, the BBC test card made an unplanned appearance at the end of an edition of Sportsday on the BBC News Channel.

Presenter Laura McGhie was wrapping up the sports bulletin and pointing viewers to the BBC website. A view of the BBC Sport website home page should’ve appeared on the large screen behind Laura but the test card appeared instead.
