Branding anomaly on BBC Sport trail board
Monday 9th May
2pm This week’s ITV branding is courtesy of Mark Titchner
As is usually the case, Monday’s 1.30pm ITV junction saw us move on to another set of ITV Creates idents. This week’s idents were produced by Mark Titchner.
Mark’s idents were first aired in February 2019.
9.30pm Old and new BBC logo in the same promotional graphic
Thanks to one of our readers for flagging this one – and apologies that we’re a bit late picking up on it.
This promotional image for the new series of Silent Witness appeared online last week – with the new BBC blocks logo positioned alongside the old one.
10.30pm Unofficial BBC Northern Ireland logo appears on endboard
This endboard was shown at the end of Fergal Keane: Living with PTSD tonight on BBC Two.
It looks as though a production company noticed that there was a new BBC blocks logo and took it upon themselves to update the official BBC Northern Ireland logo, but leaving the Gill Sans ‘NORTHERN IRELAND’ text.

12.20pm BBC Two Northern Ireland HD begins test transmissions on DSAT
Test transmissions for BBC Two Northern Ireland HD have now begun on digital satellite. This is the only version of BBC Two not officially available in HD on DSAT.
BBC Two Northern Ireland HD has been available on Freeview and YouView since its launch in November 2018 – and on Virgin cable from early December 2018.
BBC Two Northern Ireland HD is currently testing on a Sky transponder rather than on BBC capacity. You can find the test transmission here:
Frequency: 12226
Polarisation: H
Symbol Rate: 27500
FEC: 2/3
Mode: DVB-S2, 8PSK
ID: 11015
The first signs of tests for BBC Two Northern Ireland HD came a few weeks ago, when a green screen appeared, accompanied by BBC Two NI EPG data.
Our thanks to Mike Manning for the information.

8.10pm Another production company using unapproved BBC branding
Regular readers of this site will know that we often report on instances of mocked up versions of the BBC masterbrand logo being used on air.
For some reason, some designers/production staff find it more convenient to create their own version of the BBC blocks logo, or quickly Google an image of the logo, rather than obtaining the proper, approved version of the logo from the BBC.
Cactus TV is one of the latest to create their own version of the BBC blocks. The example shown below was used on the endboard for Between the Covers this evening.
On a more positive note, Countryfile has finally got hold of an approved version of the BBC blocks logo (albeit the old blocks) for its updated title sequence – having used an unapproved, mocked up version of the logo in its titles for many years.
9.30pm BritBox’s not very good reproduction of the Eldorado logo
Not sure why they couldn’t just have got hold of a copy of the original artwork – but as part of the launch of some episodes of Eldorado on Britbox, the online video subscription service seems to have commissioned a recreation of the logo for publicity materials.
Not exactly a precision reproduction of the original. Yes, most people won’t notice/care – but that’s not the point!

1.10pm Lower-third graphics failure on Politics Live
Lower-third graphics crashed during today’s edition of Politics Live and were missing for the last 20 minutes of the programme.
An incorrect name strap remained on screen for a few minutes during an interview with Sammy Wilson MP. Host Jo Coburn later apologised for the problems.
4.30pm BBC NI News home page still displaying election results panel
It’s a week since polling day – and even considering the importance of the election result in Northern Ireland, is it still necessary to have the results displayed on the BBC News NI home page?
Anyone in Northern Ireland who is even vaguely interested in local politics is bound to be fully aware of the outcome of the local elections by this stage.
The DUP has made it clear they won’t participate in the election of a speaker tomorrow, as part of their ongoing protest at the NI Protocol. So, no Assembly can be formed. This situation is not likely to be resolved any time soon.
UPDATE: the election results panel was removed on Friday afternoon.
8.45pm Did you spot the new BBC website navigation bar today?
The main navigation bar on the BBC website was updated today. The new bar is taller and features a larger version of the BBC blocks logo (see the old v new images below).
On mobile devices, the BBC logo is now centred.
The new section icons will be added to the navigation bar at a later date.
10.30pm Unusual inconsistency in ITV show end credits
The Games – a revival of the Channel 4 show – has been airing on ITV this week. It’s an Initial production for ITV.
Presumably, Initial was responsible for the credit sequence – which seems to break from ITV’s end credit standard in terms of font usage. ITV normally insists on the use of their in-house font, ITV Reem for the credits text. Not sure what font is being used here.
And the programme’s production endboard features a horrible cut-out of the ITV logo.
Not the usual high standard of presentation we’d expect from ITV.
With thanks to Cameron Young for flagging this item.
11pm Large desk top makes its first post-Covid lockdown appearance on The View
Tonight’s edition of BBC Northern Ireland’s current affairs programme, The View, saw what is potentially the first on air appearance of the large desk top since the start of the Covid pandemic.
The large desk top was usually deployed for The View, pre-Covid, and was also used for election programmes. However, the recent local election coverage was based in BBC NI’s larger Studio A facility.

12.30am Test card returns to late-night Channel 4
Well, in the shape of a sponsorship sting by Eve. Not sure how long this has been running for but we managed to catch a glimpse of it earlier in the week and thought it was worth a mention.
7.45pm Branding anomaly on BBC Sport trail board
The BBC Sport trail on Friday evenings on BBC One more often than not will oblige with an out-of-date logo or two.
This trail carried old versions of the channel logos for many weeks. And never managed to update the BBC News logo from the Gill Sans version until recently.
The BBC News logo is now up-to-date. However, they’re using the standard BBC News logo on the trail board, which includes the BBC masterbrand. None of the other channel logos include the BBC blocks logo. Shouldn’t it just have ‘NEWS’ there?
No idea why the description line for the BBC News entry is entirely in capitals. And yes, there’s an apostrophe missing there.
