The BBC’s Wimbledon coverage saw the introduction of a new BBC Sport graphics package. I began to recreate the on-screen graphics, firstly as stills, but with the aim of eventually recreating the animations.
As a ‘what if’ I applied the graphics to the BBC’s coverage of the Winter Olympic Games.
When the BBC updated the graphics used for Final Score, they kept the previous layout and simply updated the design and animations to match the new BBC Sport branding.
I felt a few elements didn’t completely match, such as the grey ticker – a new style version has been used on Match of the Day.
The large box displaying the BBC Sport and Final Score logos was also something I didn’t think was needed, so I extended the vidiprinter to fit the full width.
My animated recreation of the name strap is largely the same as the version we’ve seen used for Wimbledon and the Commonwealth Games. This version has the yellow (and multicolour gradient) portion of the strap fade into place. I prefer this to other versions which use a vertical stretch instead.
The only element of the original graphic I changed is the animation of the BBC Sport logo. The fade version moved a bit too quickly, so I swapped it for the slower version used on the stretch animation.
